Iron deficiency anemia due to chronic blood loss is characterized by which of the following:
a. Low serum iron, high total iron binding capacity, and low serum ferritin
b. High serum iron, low total iron binding capacity, and low serum ferritin
c. Low serum iron, low total iron binding capacity and high serum ferritin
d. High serum iron, low total iron binding capacity, and high serum ferritin

A 6-year old ewe presents with signs of depression, anorexia, icterus and anemia. The flock is kept on pasture, supplemented with cattle feed and has recently been vaccinated and dewormed. Which of the following can cause these clinical signs?
a. Copper toxicity
b. Copper deficiency
c. Selenium toxicity
d. Selenium deficiency
a. Copper toxicity
Copper toxicity can occur when sheep are fed cattle or horse feed. Acute signs can occur after injury to liver.
A beef cattle operation reports several cases of hypomagnesemic tetany during the last 2 spring seasons. This may be due to:
a. Supplementing pastures with high potassium and nitrogen fertilizers
b. Feeding heavy proportions of legumes
c. Heavy grain supplementation
d. Supplementing pastures with low potassium and nitrogen fertilizers
a. Supplementing pastures with high potassium and nitrogen fertilizers
Iron deficiency anemia
Microcytic hypochromic anemia
Types of vitamin E
Alpha tocopherol is the most potent anti-oxidant
(Naturally occurring is RRR-@-tocopherol)
Beta tocopherol is the most abundant in diet
Sample conditions to measure vit E
Measure in serum, don’t let it touch the rubber.
Refrigerate
Do not use hemolysed blood
What is postparturient hemoglobinuria in cattle related to?
Marked hypophosphatemia, usually seondary to grazing in poor phosphate soils.
Clinical signs: depression, anorexia, decreased milk production, hemoglobinuria, anemia and icterus during the first month after calving. Anemia is usually very marked and at day 4-5, a marked erythropoietic response is observed.
