Nutrient and E requirements of sport and racing horses, Stallions; feeding and nutrition Flashcards

1
Q

Feeding of breeding stallions (6)

A
  1. Feed maint until 2 wks before breeding, then supplement aa’s and vits and mins
  2. Max of 2.2-2.5kg per 100kgBW which roughly equates to 10-15kg per day
  3. Low starch abd high fat to incr the E efficiency and decr starch overload
  4. Vit A,C,E, Se and antiox to protect the sperm cells from antiox damage
  5. Min of 1kg of forage
  6. Max: 0.75kg of conc per 100kg bw

  • DCP (g): 330 vs 850
  • CF%: 16-18 vs lower

Q

Feeding of the work horse: what are the 2 important points to mention

A
  • NOT to be fed reserve for future events- only acc to immediate needs
  • Divided into 3 groups acc to the intensity of work

Q

Feeding of the work horse acc to the intensity of work (6)

A

Light vs med vs hard work

  • Hrs of work: 1-3 vs 3-5 vs 5-8
  • DE % incr: 25 vs 50 vs 100
  • Forage:conc ratio: 65:35 vs 50:50 vs 35:65
  • DM (kg per 100kgbw): 1.5-2.25 vs 1.75-2.5 vs 2.25-3
  • MJ/day (500kg): 90 vs 110 vs 140
  • BCS: 5-6 vs 5 vs 4-5

Q

Feeding of the workhorse: protein (4)

A
  • 12-16% around 700g/horse
  • 9.5 x DE (max 940g/day)
  • Work has little effect on protein requirement therefore the required value is similar to maint
  • Can have adverse effects:
    • Heat prod
    • Acid-base balance
    • NH3 acc- resp problems

Q

Feed supplements and salt

A
  1. Minerals: Ca, P and Mg—- BONES
  2. Vitamins: E and C—- ANTIOX
  3. Electrolytes: 1% NaCl in conc– to compensate for the salt loss through sweating
