Nucleotides Flashcards
composed of?
a pentose monisaccharide, a phosphate group, a nitrogenoud base
how are nucelotides linked together?
through condensation reactionto form a poly nucleotide phosphate group at 5th carbon forms a covelent bond at third carbon of the adjacent nucleotide- phosphodiester
what is the backbone
phosphate joined with carbon 3 of next nucleotide joined by phosphodiester bonds
small dna bases called?
pyrimidines
large dna bases?
purines
four bases?dna?
t and d, c and g
which bases are pyrimidines?
thymine and cytosine
semi conservative replication of dna?
dna helicase causes two strands to split. free nucleotides that have activated are attracted to complementory bases. once together they are lined up, dna polymerade joins them. each new molecule is composed of one original strand and a newly formed one
how rna is different to dna
rna has a u instead of a t, uracil replaces thymine
