Nucleic Acids Flashcards
5 functions of nucleotides
Energetics, intracellular signaling, metabolism/coenzymes, oligosaccharide structure, and genetics.
RNA vs DNA chemically
RNA has extra oxygen at 2’ carbon. Both negatively charged.
Nucleotide vs nucleoside
Nucleoside only has sugar and base, nucleotide has sugar, base, and phosphate.
Nucleoside bases
Adenosine, guanosine, cytosine, uridine, thymidine
Purines
Labeled as R. Adenine and guanine. Double ring structure. Guanine has oxygen
Pyrimidines
Cytosine, uracil, thymine. One ring, uracil and thymine have two O. Thymine with extra C.
RNA capping modifies which carbon?
2’
Where is DNA found?
Cell nucleus and mitochondria
Bonds between nucleotides
G and C 3 bond.
A and T 2 bond.
DNA structure when basepaired
Antiparallel, major and minor groove.
RNA internal structure
Can basepair with itself to form secondary structure.
DNA conformation
Can be supercoiled or relaxed. Supercoiling can be - or +, needs energy input. Supercoiling requires breaking and rejoining strand. Left handed negative
Topoisomerase
Enzymes that wind and unwind dna. Two types.
DNA denaturing
Needs high temp. Higher with more GC. Needs low salt.
