Membrane Structure Flashcards
Plasma membrane functions
Cellular integrity and control, information reception, movement, cell to cell interaction
Organelle membrane functions
Transduction of signals, transport systems, distinct intracellular environment.
Properties of fluid membrane
Localized protein insertion has uniform distribution. Reseals after damage. No flipflopping
Membrane components
Phospholipids, other lipids, proteins, carbs on outside.
4 major phospholipid types
3 phosphoglycerides, and sphingomyelin.
Are bilayers favorable?
Yes because of two fatty acid chains.
What does cholesterol do
Stiffen internal bits. Makes firmer at lower temp.
Glycocalyx
Forms sugar barrier, made of glycolipids and others. Catches neutrophils and migrates it to infected tissue
Bilayer properties.
Asymmetrical. Allows small non polar molecules, little water, less large polar, no ions.
Lipid rafts
Signaling platform, enriched in saturated lipids and cholesterol. Involved in T cell signaling, nutrient absorption, and bad endocytosis. Can make membrane thicker and bond to each other.
What performs most membrane functions?
Proteins
Integral proteins
Cannot be removed without disrupting membrane
Peripheral
Can be removed with mild conditions.
Membrane protein function
Transporters, channels, anchors, receptors, enzymes.
Caveolae
Second type of lipid raft. Bad endocytosis.
