Action directed towards human functioning and development within social groups in accord with human potential, known human limitations, and desire to be normal
What is normalcy
Is essentially human and that which is in accord wkth genetics and constitutional characteristics and talents of individuals

Coping mechanisms
Adaptive: helps deal effectively with stress
Maladaptive: can result in unnecessary distress for person/others associated with stressful event
Problem focused coping
Improve situation by actions
Ex get help, find solution, get info
Emotion focused coping
Thoughts and actions that relieve emotional distress
Ex talking, writing, journaling, mind meditation
Short vs long term coping
Short: done right away to relieve stress (ex alcohol/smoking)
Long: constructive/realistic (ex studying from beginning of semester)
