Non Enteric Gram -ve Part IV Flashcards
Two Moraxella species of importance and what they cause
- M. bovis: bovine kcs
- M. ovis: ovine kcs
Bovine KCS
- animals <2yrs old more affected
- caused by trauma to cornea by flies, dust,UV light, projectiles on hay feeder, long grasses in pastures
Clinical signs of infectuous bovine KCS
Lacrimation, blepharospasms, redness of eye, epiphora, corneal opacity or corneal ulcer
Worst case: corneal rupture
What is the peak season for infectious bovine KCS and why?
March to August; b/c increased # of flies
Typical morphology of Moraxella
- gram -ve
- plump, short rods
- on stained smears appear in pairs (diplobacili)
Does M. bovis or M. ovis grow on MacConkey agar?
No
Which 2 bacteria are select agents in the US?
- B. pseudomallei
- B. mallei
Define select agents
Biological agents/toxins determined to have the potential to be a threat to public health/safety
Reservoirs for Tularemia
Lagomorphs and rodents
What causes CEM
Taylorella equigenitalis
Typical disease feature of CEM in infected male/female equines
- mares: temporarily infertile; become longtime carriers
- stallions: don’t dev. clinical signs but harbor the agent
Which bacteria in the chapter are considered foreign pathogens to the US?
- Taylorella equigenitalis
- Burkholderia mallei
What bacterial agent was used against allied troop horses during WWI?
- Burkholderia mallei (Glander’s)
Most DISTINCTIVE clinical sign of a horse w/ Glander’s
Bilateral purulent nasal discharge
Is B. mallei or B. pseudomallei more abundant in the environment?
B. pseudomallei
