Non-enteric Gram +ve Part I Flashcards
Important haemophilus species
- H. felis
- H. parasuis
- H. paracuniculus
- H. haemoglobinophilus
- H. aegypticus
Most important disease in swine
H. parasuis
How do you prevent H. Parasuis in naive herd?
- serotype characterization of prevalent strain so right vaccine is chosen
- autogenous vaccine from representative prevalent serotype
How is the autogenous vaccine prepared?
Isolate the bacteria/virus from the infected host and inject vaccine into other animals
Histophilus somni causes
Thromboembolic meningoencephalitis (TEME) in feedlot cattle
Organs histophilus somni mostly affects are
CNS
- causes brown necrosis in multiple foci
Steer calf was recumbent in AM and died later that day; brain had gross lesions of vascular thrombosis. What is the causative agent?
Histophilus somni
Disease caused by actinobacillus lignieresii
Wooden tongue in ruminants
What predisposes animals to wooden tongue?
Trauma
What are the clinical signs of wooden tongue disease?
- lesions w/ odorless pus
- tongue protruding from mouth
- hard masses on the tongue
How do you diagnose wooden tongue?
- see sulfur granules in exudate
- gram -ve bacteria in CaPO4
- inflammatory (club like filaments) debris -aka- splendore hoeppli rxn
How to differentiate wooden tongue from lumpy jaw?
Lumpy jaw granules are more yellow and have gram +ve bacteria that branches
Treatments for wooden tongue
- surgical drainage
- tetracyclines
- sodium iodide or penicillin as a secondary measure
