Diseases Caused By E. coli Flashcards
1
Q
Neonatal diarrhea in piglets
A
- mortality high
- affects piglets less than 1yr
- causes watery diarrhea, severe dehydration
- endotoxins involved STa, STb, LT
2
Q
Piglet meningitis
A
- occasional septicemia caused by invasive strains
- causes piglet death within first 48 hrs of birth
3
Q
Weaning enteritis (collibacillosis)
A
- abt 2 wks after weaning
- causes diarrhea, anorexia, & fever (maybe acute meningitis and fibrous polyserositis)
- lower mortality than neonatal piglets
- enterotoxins STa, STb, LT
4
Q
Edema dsease
A
- weaning pigs
- sudden death often
- forehead, eyelids, stomach wall, and larynx edema
- can see ataxia, convulsions, and paralysis may be seen
- toxin involved: shiga toxin(Stx2e) & assc. w/ E. coli O139 and O141
5
Q
Coliform mastitis
A
- sows after farrowing
- 1+ mammary glands affected
6
Q
Mastitis-meitritis-agalactica syndrome
A
- gilts post-farrowing
- involves stress, hormonal imbalance, and coliform infection
7
Q
White scours (colibacillosis) in cattle
A
- appetite decreases as feces become more fluid
- feces are white, pasty, and around anus
- dehydration & emaciation
- if left untreated, death in 4-5 days
- enterotoxin STa
8
Q
Colisepticemia
A
- sudden death due to endotoxin shock
- diarrhea, depression, resp. distress, death
- endotoxin is the principal toxin, and then cytotoxic necrotizing factor & cytolethal distending toxin
9
Q
Septicemia/bacteremia (joint illness)
A
- e. coli in joints and/or kidneys
- can enter via umbilicus
- calves
10
Q
Coliform mastitis
A
- dairy cows post-parturition
- peracute disease
- fever, anorexia, depression, sunken eyes, death due to endotoxin shock
- less severe form more common
11
Q
Collibacillosis and coliscepticemia in ovines
A
- neonatal lambs
- similar to calves, less common
- same enterotoxic and enteropathogenic strains as collibacillosis
12
Q
Watery mouth (ovine)
A
- neonatal lambs
- dull and anorectic
- hypersalivation
- abd. Tympani
- splashing sounds in abomasum
- death within 6 to 24 hrs
- e. Coli endotoxemia
13
Q
Colisepticemia (k9)
A
- neonatal pups
- often fatal
14
Q
Pyometra (k9)
A
- assc. W/ progesterone-stimulated endometrium
- vaginal discharge 4-8 wks after oestrus
- in the closed cervix version, dog is toxaemic
15
Q
UTI (K9)
A
- Adults
- cystitis (females) most common
- e. Coli can ascend higher into urinary tract
- bacteriuria= >105 e. Coli per mL urine
