-annoyance which is primarily a psychological response
- efficiency reduction of noise has been found to increase work output

what to do about noise in urban areas
A
- careful planning of cities
-divide the city into zones,
-separate residential areas from the main streets by using wide green belts,
- house fronts should be no less than 15 m from the main streets
- widen the main streets to reduce the level of penetration - control of vehicles
- heavy vehicles should not be driven on narrow streets
- stop using the horn unnecessarily - improve acoustic insulation of buildings e.g doublce glazed windows
