  1. auditory effects
    -100 db continues exposures can lead to permanent hearing loss
    - >160 db rupture tympanic membrane
  2. non auditory
    -Interference with speech
    -annoyance which is primarily a psychological response
    - efficiency reduction of noise has been found to increase work output
    -phsyiological changes: BP, sweating, RR , Intracranial pressure , visual distrubances

what to do about noise in urban areas

A
  1. careful planning of cities
    -divide the city into zones,
    -separate residential areas from the main streets by using wide green belts,
    - house fronts should be no less than 15 m from the main streets
    - widen the main streets to reduce the level of penetration
  2. control of vehicles
    - heavy vehicles should not be driven on narrow streets
    - stop using the horn unnecessarily
  3. improve acoustic insulation of buildings e.g doublce glazed windows

4.insudstries and railwaus
5. education- no noise abatement programme can succeed without education the people
