A

A socialist leaning president had been elected in 1970, Salvador Allende, which was a concern for the US. Nixon authorised the CIA to obstruct his gov and explore possibilities of removing him. Nixon cut $70 million of US aid to Chile and this resulted in a military coup d’etat which brought a dictatorship under Pinochet.
