What caused the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis?
Discontent with the Shah (who was seen as a puppet of the US0 was increasing and he was forced to flee to US where he stayed for cancer treatment. Khomeini took over who hated the US. Anger about the Shah’s stay led to the crisis.

Day 88 - A secret military incursion using eight helicopters, none ever reached Teheran. Khomeini claimed divine intervention and the hostages were split up around the country to prevent a second attempt.
