Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
Decomposers produce what
Ammonia
Bacteria convert the ammonia to what
nitrites and nitrates
Nitrate
NO3
Nitrites
NO2
Ammonia
NH3
Plants to in what to make more ammonia
NO3
What do plants use ammonia for?
Making DNA and proteins
If ammonia, Nitrates and nitrites build up what can happen?
It can be toxic for many organisms (even humans)
Human what adds ammonia to the environment
Urinate and produce fecal matter
Fertilizers contain what
Ammonia (NH3) and (NO3)
When ammonia ends up in rivers what reduces the amount of oxygen in rivers?
When NH3 comes in contact with O2 it creates NO3 as a waste product
What is the Nitrogen Cycle?
A conversion of nitrogen from one form to another.
If nitrate levels are high what is the oxygen level?
Very low, the conversion of NH3 to NO2 then to NO3 requires oxygen. Oxygen is taken out of the water to do this.
If fish die in the rivers because of low oxygen, what happens?
The O2 level gets lower as their bodies decompose and continue to suck up oxygen.
