NEW FFP MD April 2014 Flashcards
Roof line?
- protect exposures
- prevent fire extending past trench
- extinguish fire that cannot be reached from below, such as fire in cornice
Fire on 2 floors ?
Extra engine & truck. If progress is not made on at least one floor in a short period of time – 2nd alarm. Extending to exposure 2nd alarm
Absence of front f/e in OLT usually indicate?
Railroad flats. Unless corner bld
Cellar fire: first line OLT?
To cellar entrance door inside the bld, under the interior stair on first floor. Remain there - should not be advanced into cellar unless there is no outside entrance or fire in minor
Cellar fire: OLT. 2nd line?
Front or rear entrance
Store fires: OLT. A 2 1/2” shall be stretched for large volume fires & second line stretched to ?
2nd line OLT store fire – entrance hallway
OLT: stairway fires. Preferred ladder for weakened stairs ?
Extension preferred. Shorter nested length allows for easier maneuverability & positioning, while adjusted length should insure proper coverage of entire span.
For fires in rooms in vicinity of the shaft, after fire in the room has been __,the line should bd operated into the shaft in order to __ the shaft fire before continuing through the apt for knockdown & final extinguishment?
Knockdown, knockdown
Collapse in OLT usually not a problem?
True. Because of short span of floor beams (25’)
Indications of possible collapse?
- plaster ceiling falling
- floors or ceiling sagging
- usual creaking noises
Bld in rear are usually not as seriously exposed because they are anywhere from __’ to __’ or more away from OLT. Extension must be kept in mind if there is ?
10’ to 25’.
- heavy fire in the rear
- windows in exposed are open
- wind blowing in direction of exposed buildings
SRO:
- occupants has access to both means of egress (stairs & f/e) w/o going thru another persons room
- sprinkler each room & stairway;no roof tank. Supplied from water main in the street. Cannot be supplied by FD.
- interior alarm system/exit lights & signs must be provided
Rear tenements: small in area. Frame or Nfp. Range from __ to __ stories?
2 to 5 stories. 10’ to 25’ from front bld
NLT: h-type. Generally living units are in the __ line of the letter “H”?
Vertical line
The introduction of steel into the “H” type design had the following advantages:
- allowed girders to support floors instead of costly bearing wall of brick
- consistency of steel structural characteristics allowed a fairly exact moment of failure to be determined thereby eliminating costly overbuilding reqd by use of safety factors when using less predictable materials such as masonry/wood
- ability of steel to be connected permitted coupling of several bld to form H design
H: most common roof?
Top floor ceiling several feet below the main roof beams. Roof boards directly to top of roof beams. Sturdy roof.
Springy roof h-type - get off roof inmediately?
F. Inverted
___ stairs are a tremendous asset in heavy fire operations on the top floor?
Transverse.
Main concern channel rails?
They are not fire stopped. These vertical voids, about one square foot.
Fire showing in the throat, courtyard & front windows, and TL stream is being used, it should be directed at the __first?
Windows in throat first
H-type: Primary means for getting to the roof would be?
Winged or isolated stairs in the same bld or any stairway in an adjoining bld.
Two floors of fire or extensive cockloft fire?
2nd alarm
Medium fire condition ?
Extra engine & truck
H-type: Standing in front of fire bld & beginning at extreme left that will be __ wing?
A-wing
