Natural Gas emergencies & fires Flashcards
Priority order of valve shutdown ?
Appliance, Meter, Head of service(found just INSIDE bld where gas service enters), Exterior gas riser valve(before any exterior meter, Curb valve, Street valve
Mostly methane. Also contains nitrogen, ethane, propane. Ignites at __, colorless/odorless, lighter then air, explosive range _ to _, non-toxic, asphyxiant.
1163 degrees, explosive range 5-15%
How do you shut curb valve ?
1/4 turn clockwise
Some older curb valves require multiple turns to close.
7 1/2 to 15 full turns
FDNY TIC: intrinsically safe. ?
No. FD issued flashlights are
Leaking plastic gas pipe ?
Do not touch or come near a leaking plastic pipe
Dept fans are not intrinsically safe & should not be used to vent gas ? T o F
True
Mjr indoor gas leak: start venting ?
Upper floors & work your way down to the first floor
Sewer man covers can be removed ?
Approval of on scene Chief Officer
Electric manhole covers: removal ?
By FDNY when requested by utility company gas rep & on scene Chief. Prior to removal utility co checks for stray voltage
Round manhole covers should be removed by 2 FF utilizing manhole hooks. Where are they found ?
Battalion vehicle carry two. Do not pull rectangular or square electric manhole covers.
CGI - Tiff carried by ?
Batt & ladder co
MSA altair carried by. ?
ALL non soc supprt ladder companies
DCGI: all SOC, SSL, HMTU. Calibrated to % of gas in air ? T o F
True
DCGI & Altair alarm at ?
10% LEL the Indoor action level & different alarm 20% LEL the outdoor action level. Begin evac at 10% LEL
FDNY in compliance w/Osha will begin evacuation at __% LEL if we are unable to reduce LEL immediately(vent, shut off valves)
10%
Utility Co meters are calibrated the same as FDNY ? T o F
False. Utility Co meters display percent of gas in air.
.50% gas in air = __% LEL
10% LEL. 5.00 = 100% LEL
Peck vent: code reads 5-R-25 ?
Start at left hand front corner of the house, 5’ to right, 25’ right angles toward the sidewalk
The letters EFV on tag ?
EFV = no curb valve. Letters NC no curb valve present
MSA Altair to all Non SSL & does not replace Tiff. Has two sensors O2 & Gas. Calibrated to methane. Meter should not be used to detect gases other then natural gas. T or F?
True
MSA Altair malfunctions ?
Not sent thru bag. Swap 1 for 1 w/ HM ops.
MSA Altair: a series of ‘+++’ under COMB/EX ?
Atmosphere is ABOVE 100% LEL
MSA Altair: normal O2 on meter is 20.8%. Low alarm is set at __% & high alarm is set at __%. Upon activation don facepiece. Notify dispatcher & have utility respond & request ETA. A series of ‘+++’ screen under O2 ?
Low alarm = 10% high = 20%Atmosphere ABOVE 25% O2
TIF: carried by Battalions & ladder co. A gas source as low as __ppm can be detected?
5ppm. Intrinsically safe. Not for CO. Fully charged lasts 4 hours of continuous use. 30 second warm up & ticking sound will be heard.
In some older HIGH pressure gas services, the main shut off valve will require approximately __ turns of operating nut, in clockwise direction to shut off the gas flow?
4 1/2 to 5 turns
A leak or break in any gas piping may be stopped or greatly diminished by taping, stuffing rags, paper into break ? T/F
F. Low pressure only
Indoor gas leak not burning use fog and/or dept fan to vent ? T/F
Fog not fan(not intrinsically safe)
Do NOT pull any electric manhole if there is manhole fire in the AREA or if smoking of arcing is observed in electric manhole or transformer vault?
True
If utility company meter reads .50% of gas in air – what does fdny meters read ?
10% LEL. Ex: 5% gas would = 100% LEL. Explosive range 5% to 15%
