What is the difference between a new and a smart material?
A
new materials have been designed and engineered - smart materials are new materials but their properties change in response to changes in their environment.

what is nitinol?
A
a shape memory alloy (a new material) a metal that remembers shape. It will spring back to its original shape when it reaches a certain temperature. This is useful in glasses frames and in heart stents.
