Define a ferrous metal

A

A metal that contains iron. You can get ferrous alloys as well as just iron

What is an alloy and why are metals alloyed

A

a mixture of metals e.g. copper+ zinc = brass. This means you get the best properties of each metal. Brass it harder and stronger than pre copper or zinc

A

where do metals come from and how are they processed?

A

ores in the ground- they are crushed and heated in a blast furnace until they melt. They are then refined to get rid of impurities. the molten metal is then cast

Explain how metals can be painted (finished)

A

A metal primer will be applied and then a topcoat. This can come in a range of colours and finishes and give a very durable watherproof finish

Explain how metals can be plastic coated

A

they can be heated and then dipped in a polymer powder. This will then stick to the surface of the metal. When heated it will melt and form a thin layer on top of the metal.
