Metals Flashcards
Define a ferrous metal
A metal that contains iron. You can get ferrous alloys as well as just iron
What is an alloy and why are metals alloyed
a mixture of metals e.g. copper+ zinc = brass. This means you get the best properties of each metal. Brass it harder and stronger than pre copper or zinc
give 4 stock forms of metals
sheet, strip, rods, bards, pipe/ tube, angle, etc.
where do metals come from and how are they processed?
ores in the ground- they are crushed and heated in a blast furnace until they melt. They are then refined to get rid of impurities. the molten metal is then cast
Explain how metals can be painted (finished)
A metal primer will be applied and then a topcoat. This can come in a range of colours and finishes and give a very durable watherproof finish
Explain how metals can be plastic coated
they can be heated and then dipped in a polymer powder. This will then stick to the surface of the metal. When heated it will melt and form a thin layer on top of the metal.
