Neuroscience (2c) Flashcards
Traumatic brain injury
Concussions, spinal cord injuries
Acquired brain injury
Infections, exposure to toxins, tumours, degenerative diseases, strokes
Treatments for brain injury
Ealry medica care
Medications
Cooling of the brain and body
Neuronal loss prevention treatments
Behavioural therapies
Corpus callous
Made up of dense neural fibres (axons) that allow for communication of information from one side from the brain to the other
- connects the two brain hemispheres
Evolution
The process of the development ad divergence of life (species) on this planet
Evolutionary psychology
Studies how the process of evolution has shaped the body and brain via the interaction of our genes and the environment to produce our thoughts and behaviours
Homologous traits
Characteristics that are similar between species and can be traced back to a common ancestor
Analogous traits
Characteristics that have evolved independently in different species
Convergent evolution
The development of similar physic characteristics or behaviour in different species that do not share a common ancestor
Evolution by natural selection
animals with physical and behavioural attributes well suited to their environment are more likely to survive, reproduce and pass on their traits to their offspring
Fitness
An individuals ability to successfully grow to maturity and have offspring
Four observations of Darwin
1) animals are changing over time
2) aspects of species that seem different on the surface such as a human hand and a bats wing had structural similarities underneath
3)selective breeding of captive animals leads to changes in the appearance of the animal
4) Not all animals that are born will survive to maturity and be able to reproduce
