Consiousness (4c) Flashcards
Hypnosis
Altered state of consciousness, with heightened suggestibility, deep relaxation, and intense focus
- post hypnotic responses
- posthypnotic amnesia
Hypnotic hallucinations
- decreased activity in anterior cingulate cortec when used to reduce pain
Divided consciousness theory
Hypnosis splits awareness into two parts; one part responds to the hypnotists suggest, the other part continents to process pain information but at a less conscious level
Social cognitive theory
The participant is highly motivated to belive in hypnosis nd without awareness works hard to ignore the pain
Hypnosis - the brain
Neuroimgaing research digest that the brain’s anterior cingulate cortex may be particularly involved when hypnosis is used to anaesthes or reduce pain
Psychoactive drugs
Chemicals that affect awareness behaviour, sensation, perception, or mood
Addiction
A psycological or physical compulsion to take a drug resulting from regular ingestion and eating to maladaptive patterns of behaviour and changes in physical response
Tolerance
A mark of physical dependance on a drug, in which the person is required to take incrementally lager doses of the drug to active the same effect
Withdrawal symtoms
Unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects of reducing intake of a drug after a person has become addicted
Depressants
Slow the activitiy of the central nervous system reducing tension and inhibitions
- include alcohol and dative hypotonic drug
- can interfere with judgment, motor activity, and concentration
Sedative hypnotic (benzodiazepines)
Produces relaxation and drowsiness; relives anxiety
- xnanex, Ativan, and Valium
Opioids
Derived from the sap of the opium poppy
- include opium Horne, morphed, codpiece, and OxyContin
- activate the opioid receptors in the brain, providing their analgesic effect and their related high
- reduce pain and emotional tension and produced pleasurable and calming feelings
Stimulants
Increase the activity of the central nervous system
- caffeine, nicotine, Cochin, amphetaimes
Cochin
Increases enegery nd alterness
- produces euphoric feelings of well-being
- negatively impacts memory, attention, and descion making ability
Amphetaimes
Small doses increase energy and alertness and reduce appetite
- larg doses produces intoxication and psychosis
- includes methamphetamines (cystal meth) and MDMA (ecstasy)
Hallucinogens
Produce sensory or perceptual dissertations called hallucinations
- LSD
- magic mushrooms
- mescaline (buttons, mesic)
- DMT
- ketamine (special K, cat Valium)
- PCP
- Cannibis
