History And Science (1b) Flashcards
What are the two core tenets of science?
The universe operates according to certain natural laws
- such laws are discoverable and testable
What is deductive reasoning?
starting with a very broad theory using that theory to make predictions and then using observations and experiment to come to conclusions
What is inductive reasoning?
It is starting with specific observations and experiments, using that to make predictions then finally concluding with a broad theory
What is hypothetical-deductive reasoning?
Starting off with a hypotheses, then using that to conduct observations and expiraments then finally building a theory based on weather the hypotheses was supported or not
What is psycology?
using the scientific method to study human behaviour and mental processes
What is pseudo psychology>
Not using scientific methods when it comes to commenting on human behaviour and mental processes
- crystals
- hidden or double agenda
What is a hypothesis?
It states ones predication in a way that it can be tested
It can be found to be true or false
What is a variable ?
A condition, event, or situation that is studied
Independent variable
The variable you manipulate
Dependant variable
The variable that you measure (or the variable that is changed by the IV)
Operational definition
Is how we 9the researcher) decide to measure our variables
Population
The entire group that is of interest to reasearch ears
Sample
A portion of the population that is selected for the study
What is random selection?
Everyone in the population of interest has an equal chance of being selected
What is sampling basis?
Selecting a group that is especially likely to confirm your hypothesis
