Neuropathic Diseases Flashcards

1
Q

By which pathway do nerves obtain sugar?

A

Nerves do not require insulin for sugar uptake but instead use the polyol pathway.
The blood sugar difuses across the membrane and is converted to Sorbitol, and then fructose.

Leads to an oxidative effect that destroys the nerves. Sorbitol also has an osmotic effect.
