What are the sulfonylureas?
These are the Rides and Zides!
Stimulate the pancreas Beta cells to release more insulin.
Include
Glyburide (Micronase)
Glipizide (Glucotrol)
Glimepiride (Amaryl)
What are the Biguinuides?
These decrease the production of glucose by the liver and include:
Metformin
What are thiazolidinediones?
These increase cellular response to insulin
AKA They put the “Glit in yo Zone”
Rosiglitazone (Avandia)
Pioglitazone (Actose)
What are the alpha glucosidase inhibitors?
These reduce the intestinal uptake of carbohydrates.
Acarbose (No carbs!)
Miglitol (Gummy worms)
What are the two rapid acting forms of insulin?
Lispro (Humalog) O: 10-15 mins P: 1-2h D: 3-5h
Apartate (Novolog) O: 10-15 mins P: 1-2h D: 3-5h
What is the short acting insulin?
Regular insulin!
O: .5-1 hour
P: 2-4h
D: 4-8h
What are the two intermediate acting insulin?
NPH O: 1-3h P: 4-10h D: 10-18h
Lente
What are the two long acting insulin?
Glargine (Lantus) O: 2-3h P: none D: 24+ hours
Detemir (Levemir) O: 1h P: none D: 24 hours
Type 2 NIDDM NPO orders
1/2 the normal dose of long acting (Lantus or Levemir)
BG check q6 hours with short acting available for coverage.
D5W or D5 1/2 NS while NPO
Type 1 IDDM NPO orders
1/2-1/3 normal dose of long acting (Levemir or Lantis)
BG checks q6 hours
D5W
