Diabetic medications Flashcards
What are sulfonylureas?
these stimulate the producton of endogenous insulin by blocking potassium channels! This restores beta cells to glucose sensitivity
Ex: Glypizide, Glimeperide, and Glyburide.
they all end in IDE
Glypizide
Glimeperide
Glyburide
These are all sulfonylureas that stimulate the production of insulin by beta cells.
Complication of sulfonylureas?
Hypoglycemia as they reintroduce insulin production.
What are the biguanides?
Decreases intestinal absorption of sugars.
Leads to diahrea or lactic acidosis.
It is Metformin (Glucophage)!
Contra indicated in renal dz patients as it can lead to lactic acidosis and upset stomach!!
What class of drugs is metformin?
It is part of the Biguanides!
Decrease hepatic G1 production and intestinal absorption.
What are alpha glucosidase inhibitors?
These delay digestion of CHOs and delay glucose absorption by competitive amylase and intestinal glucoside hydrolase enzymes.
Acarbose, miglitol are examples of these!
Can lead to intestinal gas.
What are the meglitinides?
Block potassium channel in the pancrease
“Repaglinide”
What are the thiazolidinediones?
Decrease insulin resistance at peripheral receptor site!
Onl active in the presence of insulin.
Known as Rosiglitazone
Pioglitazone
Monitor the LFT and CHF
