Neuroimaging Flashcards
What are the indications for imaging?
headache/raised ICP seizures weakness/stroke trauma loss of conciousness post op
What are the benefits of a CT for imaging the head?
good bone detail - good for fractures
quick
What are the downsides of CT for imaging the head?
poor soft tissue detail
causes radiation
What shows up as bright (hyperdense on CT)?
bone
What shows up as dark (hypodense on CT)?
air
What are the benefits of MRI imagine for the head?
good soft tissue detail
can see bone marrow and spinal cord
multiplanar capabilties
What are the downsides of MRI imagine for the head?
takes a long time - not good for emergencies
not compatible with pacemakers
patient must be cooperative
What are the two different MRI sequences?
T1 and T2
Describe how T1 sequence shows fat and water?
fat = bright water = dark
Describe how T2 sequence shows fat and water?
fat = dark water = bright
What is a FLAIR sequence?
type of T2 where the water is surpressed
For how long are CTs sensitive to blood?
first few hours - then MUST DO A MRI
What is a cavernoma?
cluster of abnormal blood vessels
POPCORN APPEARANCE
What is an aucoustic schwannoma?
outside the BBB, ICE CREAM APPEARANCE
What is a Chairi malformation?
brain tissue extends into the spinal cord
