Herniation Flashcards
Describe a sulfacine herniation?
unilateral/asymmetrical expansion of the cerebral hemisphere
results in compressio of the anterior cerebral artery and therefore - weakness/sensory loss of the opposite side of the body
Describe a tentorial herniation?
medial aspect of lobe - get CN 3 damage and pupil dilation
Describe a cerebellar herniation?
displacement of the cerebellum through the foramen magnum
life threatening as it damages the respiratory centre
Describe a transcalvarial herniation?
swollen brain herniates through any hole when a fracture occurs
Describe an uncal herniation?
pupillary dilation due to ipsilateral CN 3 involvement
compresses the pyramidal tracts in the CNS cerebri too
