Cognitive disorders Flashcards
What is subjective cognitive impairment?
everyday forgetfulness impacting on function
often in those with previously good memories
mismatch between symptoms and reported function/ symptoms and symptoms of known neurodegenerative disorders (patient reports worse memory loss than actually is)
What is the presentation of subjective cognitive impairment?
decreased attention span
concentration
reaction time
What is Prion disease?
a transmittable neurodegenerative disorder
What causes prion disease?
abnormality with the prion protein in the brain - causes neurodegeneration
everytime an abnormal prion protein comes into contact with a normal one - it turns abnormal
What is the most comon type of Prion disease?
Creutzfeldt Jacobs disease
What are the 4 types of CJD?
sporadic
variant
iatrogenic
genetic
Describe sporadic CJD?
60yrs onset
rapid onset dementia, neurological signs and myoclonus
4months life expectancy
due to: erroneous production of PrPsc or somatic mutation of PRNP
Describe variant CJD?
20yrs onset
very rapid neuropsychiatric decline and painful sensory disturbance
14 months life expectancy
due to: BSE exposure or contaminated food
Describe iatrogenic CJD?
30yrs cerebellar/visual onset multifocal neurological decline <2 yrs life expectancy due to: injecting growth hormone
Describe genetic CJD?
any age of onsey
life expectancy <2 years
due to: mutation of PRNP gene
