Neuroimag- 21 Flashcards
2 types of neuroimaging
- structural
- functional
Benefits of CT imaging
- early hemorrhagic lesions
- bone and calcifications
- quick procedure
- relatively cheap
Best imaging for early hemorrhagic strokes
- CT scan
- MRI with gradient recalled echo (GRE) imaging
Benefits of MRI
- best resolution
- no radiation
- no bone artifacts
Use of SPECT in HIV/AIDS
- lymphoma vs. toxoplasmosis
- lymphoma has increased uptake
- toxoplasmosis has decreased uptake
Neuroimaging findings in Schizophrenia
- enlarged lateral ventricles (most robust finding)
- reduced gray matter in prefrontal, cingulate, temporal cortices
Neuroimaging findings in Autism Spectrum Disorder
-larger brain volume at birth or abnormal increase in size in first year of life
Neuroimaging in ADHD
- smaller brain volume
- hypoactivity in premotor and prefrontal areas
Neuroimaging in Reading Disorder
-normal size asymmetry in the planum temporale is LESS in reading disorder
Neuroimaging in MDD
-smaller hippocampus
Neuroimaging in PTSD
- reduced hippocampal volumes
- exaggerated amygdalar response
- decreased hippocampal activation
Neuroimaging in OCD
-overactivity in orbitofrontal cortex
Neuroimaging in Tourette’s Disorder
- overactivity in the prefrontal cortex and ventral striatum
- Tics: additional overactivity in motor and premotor cortex and anterior cingulate gyrus
- coprolalia: additional overactivity in Broca’s and Wernicke’s language areas
