Neurodevelopmental Disorders Flashcards
What’s the brain made up of?
- 2 halves (cerebral hemispheres)
- brain stem and cerebellum
- 4 lobes
Role of the frontal lobe?
- conscious decision making
- working memory
Role of the motor cortex?
- sensory cortex (for integrating information in terms of the senses)
- links to other brain parts related to decision making
Role of the parietal lobe?
-tells us where things are in time and space
Role of the occipital lobe?
-basic vision system
Role of the cerebellum?
- has 60% of neurones in the brain
- helps with fine motor control and fine tuning
Role of the brain stem?
- connexion to the spinal cord
- sends signals out from the brain to tell body what to do
Role of the temporal lobe?
- store for memories
- left: remembering things that are language based
- right: remembering things that are visual based
Role of the limbic system?
-related to urges, feeling states and motivational drives
Role of the parasympathetic system?
-feelings of reward that you get for something
Role of the sympathetic system?
-fight/flight responses
What is the connectome?
- massively connected system
- structural connectivity of the nervous system
- comprised of the structural, functional and effective neural networks
- supports cognition across different areas
Teenage brain?
- adult like ability to reason but heightened need for reward
- lower capacity to buffer immediate influences
- poor at considering the consequences of behaviour leading to riskiness
- social brain undergoes changes
Normal development and communication in children?
- most have innate preferences for social attentiveness, allow them to develop pre-verbal social skills
- use of gestures leads to shared communication and perspective
- normal communication can allow them to share perceptions and thoughts
- develop theory of mind
- get to feel safe, attached, read intentions
