What’s the historical perspective of eating disorders?
A
- claims of dying from a broken heart (likely an eating disorder acquired due to grief?)
- religious orders on diet of bread and water then possibly giving up the bread

What’s the cross-cultural perspective of eating disorders?
A
- society’s views on body image
- controversial theory that not eating would serve as an advantage to surviving in famine, reason for the genes being passed on
- Fiji before and after tv, as they became more westernised females attitudes to body shape and size became more dissatisfied

- anorexia nervosa
- bulimia nervosa
- other specified feeding and eating disorder
- binge eating disorder

What are the five Ps in forming a disorder?
A
- predisposing (risk factors that create vulnerability)
- precipitating (something that triggers the disorder to manifest it) (e.g. genetic profile)
- presenting (clear description of the presenting problems)
- perpetuating (what’s maintaining the difficulty)
- protective (strengths the person need to overcome the difficulty)

What is the bio-psycho-social model?
A
- cascading model (each level has to be in place for the manifest disorder to appear)
- starts with precipitating factors that lead to a disorder
- ends with perpetuating factors

What are the treatments for eating disorders?
A
- food (weight restoration treatment) (has side effect of making them feel guilty etc that requires psychological treatment)
