Neuroanatomy Flashcards
What does formaldehyde do?!
Fixes proteins
Prevents auto lysis and decomposition
Why is brain tissue fixed with formaldehyde?!
Because it is very soft
What does the DAPI stain do?!
Detecte DNA in living and fixed neurones
What does Nissl stain do?!
Detects neurones and glia in the brain - stains the nuclei
Gives an idea of cytoarchitecture
What does the Golgi stain do?!
Detect neurones in the brain
Stains the cell body and neurites
Does not stain all of the neurites
What does nauta silver stain do?!
Detects degenerating axons
What is the limit of the light microscope?!
0.1 micrometers
What is the resolution of the electron microscope?!
0.1 nanometers
What type of microscopy is used for examining synapses etc?!
Electron - greater resolution
What is immunohistochemistry?!
Manufacturing antibodies to the candidate protein and by visualising these antibodies in sections of brain tissue
What type of labelling does immunohistochemistry allow?!
Discrete
What can immunohistochemistry be combined with?!
Fluorescent tags - allows the staining of multiple proteins
What is axoplasmic transport?!
Movement of material down the axon
What are microtubules used for?!
Used by neurones to transport substances from the cell body to the axon terminal
What is movement from the soma to axon terminals called?!
Anterograde transport
