Neuro 5: 4th Ventricle Flashcards
fourth ventricle is situated between
Cerebellum and brainstem (open medulla & pons)
Lateral border of fourth ventricle contains
- Superior cerebellar peduncle
- Lateral Angle (forming lateral recess)
- Inferior cerebellar peduncle
- Gracile
- Cuneate
floor of the fourth ventricle contains
- Medullary stria: seperating pontine part of the floor from medullary part of the floor
- Median (longitudinal) sulcus
- Tegmental surface of pons: Vestibular Area +Sulcus limitans
- Dorsal surface of open medulla: inferior fovea, hyoglossal and vagal trigones
Roof of fourth ventricle contains
* Superior medullary velum: connecting the 2 superior cerebellar peduncles
* Middle and inferior medullary velums: connecting the 2 inferior cerebellar peduncles
* Telachordia: where choroid plexus invaginates 4th ventricle
* Foramen of magendie
enumerate recesses of the 4th ventricle
Median Recess:
* upper wall formed by superior medullary velum
* Lower wall formed by cerebellum
2 Lateral recesses:
* located at the lateral angle of the 4th ventricle
* Each recess drain into subarachinoid space by lateral Aperatures known as foramen of Lushka
4th ventricle communicates with the 3rd ventricle by
Cerebral Aqueduct of Sylvius (at the upper angle)
4th ventricle communicates with central canal of medulla at the …..Angle
Lower Angle
4th ventricle communicates with Subarachnoid space by
- Median Aperature (foramen of magendie) opens into cisterna magna
- 2 lateral Aperatures (foramen of Lushka) open into ponto=medullary cistern
Site of choroid plexus of the 4th ventricle
invaginates lowermost area of the roof of the ventricle above foramen of magendie
Shape and blood supply of choroid plexus
- T shaped with 2 arms extending to the lateral recess
- Blood supply: Posterior inferior cerebellar Artery
Definition and causes of hydrocephalus
- Abnormal Accumilation of CSF in the brain
- Causes: obstruction in Forman of magendie, foramen of Lushka or Cerebral aqueduct of sylvius
