Neck: tongue Flashcards
Features of Ventral Surface (lower) of the tongue
- Frenulum linguale: ridge of mucous membrane at the midline, connecting tongue to the floor of the mouth
- Sublingual Papillae: Ending of the frenulum posteriorly
- Deep lingual vein: on either side of frenulum
- Fimbriated ridge: Lies lateral to Lingual Vein
in the upper (dorsal) surface of the tongue, anterior 2/3 is seperated from posterior 1/3 by
Sulcus terminalis (V shaped groove)
Anterior 2/3 of tongue lies in …..
Oral cavity
Posterior 1/3 of the tongue lies in….
Oropharynx
Mass of lymphoid tissue in posterior 1/3 of tongue is called
Lingual Tonsil
Arterial Supply of the Tongue
- Deep Artery of the tongue: Continuation Lingual Artery, it supplies anterior part and tip of the tongue
- 2 dorsal Lingual Arteries: from 2nd part Lingual Artery (deep to hyoglossus), it supplies posterior part of tongue
Venous Drainage of the tongue
- Deep vein of the tongue: drains in lingual vein
- 2 Venae comitants of lingual Artery: recieve 2 dorsal lingual Veins and drain in Lingual Vein
Motor Innervation of the tongue
All muscles of the tongue are supplied by Hypoglossal N except palatoglossus Muscle, which is supplied by Pharyngeal plexus (of cranial root accessory N through Pharyngeal plexus of Vagus N)
Sensory innervtation of the tongue
Anterior 2/3 of tongue:
* Lingual N: general sensation
* Chorda tympani: taste
Poterior 1/3 of tongue:
* Glossopharyngeal N: general & taste sensations
Root of tongue:
* Internal Laryngeal N: General
All lingual Papillae contain taste buds except
filiform Papillae
