Head: Mandibular Nerve Flashcards
```
~~~
origin of Mandibular Nerve
- Large sensory root (trigemnal ganglion)
- Small motor (trigemnal nerve from pons)
Course of Mandibular Nerve
2 roots descend into** foramen ovale** and unite just below the foramen into Mandibular Nerve trunk, the trunk then divides into anterior and posterior division
Branches of trunk of Mandibular Nerve
Motor: Nerve to medial pterygoid, which supplies:
* Medial pterygoid
* (2 tensors) Tensor palati
* tensor tympani
Sensory
* Nervous spinosus: ascends upwards through foramen spinosum to supply dura mater of posterior cranial fossa
Branches of Anterior division of Mandibular Nerve
Motor (rest of muscles of mastication):
* Temporalis
* Masseter
* Lateral pterygoid
Sensory:
* Buccal Nerve: skin covering mucosa of buccinator muscle
Enumerate branches of Posterior division of Mandibular Nerve
- Auriculotemporal N
- Inferior Alveolar N
- Lingual N
Course of Auriculotemporal Nerve
- orignates from post. div. of mand. N by 2 roots, around middle meningeal A
- It Ascends behind TMJ within the parotid gland
- it exits through upper part of parotid gland to reach the scalp
Branches of Auriculotempral N
- Parotid: parotid gland
- Articular: TMJ
Sensory: - posterior 2/3 of lateral part of Auricle
- Ear drum
- External Auditory meatus
Course of Inferior Alveolar Nerve
- it runs on medial pterygoid muscle, posterior to lingual N
- It enters Mandibular foramen and runs through mandibular canal
- It terminates at mental foramen, by dividing into Mental N and Incisive N
Branches of Inferior Alveolar Nerve
- Nerve to mylohyoid: Mylohyoid and Anterior belly of digastric
- Insicive Nerve: to incisors and Canines
- Mental Nerve: skin of chin and upper lip
- Dental branches: in Mandibular Canal
Course of Lingual Nerve
- Deep to ramus of Mandible: it runs on Medial pterygoid muscle in front of Inferior Alveolar Nerve
- Deep to Body of mandible: passes in a faint groove **below last molar tooth **
- At side of tongue: It crosses styloglossus and upper part of hypoglossus, hooks around Submandibular Duct & gives 2 ganglionic branches to Submandibular ganglion
Branches of Lingual Nerve
- Taste to Anterior 2/3 of tongue (through Corda tympani)
- General sensation to Anterior 2/3 of tongue, gums, floor of mouth
- Parasympathetic to Submandibular and sublingual Glands (through chorda tympani)
