Neuro 4 Midbrain Flashcards
Midbrain is split into Anterior and posterior by
Cerebral aqueduct of sylvius
Anterior part of midbrain is called
Cerebral peduncle
Posterior part of midbrain is called
tectum
features of the ventral surface of Midbrain
- 2 Cerebral peduncles: emerge from upper surface of pons (creating interpeduncular fossa in the middle) and ascend to disappear in the substance of cerebral hemispheres
Oculomotor Nerve (III) exits midbrain from
Interpeduncular fossa of the midbrain
Posterior surface of the midbrain presents
- 2 Superior Colliculi: overlying visual reflexes
- 2 Inferior Colliculi: overyling Auditory reflexes
- 2 Superior cerbellar peduncles: run backwards, downwards and laterally along the sides of 4th ventricle to enter the cerbellum, connecting cerebellum with midbrain
- Exit of the Trochlear Nerve (IV): jut below inferior colliculi
The only Cranial Nerve emerging from the dorsal Aspect of the midbrain
Trochlear N (IV)
Lateral suface of midbrain(cerebral Peduncle) presents
- Superior brachium: connects superior Colliculi with lateral geniculate body
- Inferior Brachium: connect inferior Colliculi with medial geniculate body
Lateral surface of pons is crossed by
3 Arteries:
* anterior choroidal A
* Posterior Cerebral A
* Superior Cerebellar A
2 Nerves:
* Trochlear N
* Optic Tract
1 Vein: Basal Vein
Lateral surface of midbrain is also related to
Tentorial Notch of tentorium cerebelli
