Network Devices Flashcards
What is a cable modem
A broadband device using DOCSIS, providing high-speed (up to 1 Gbps) data, voice, and video transmission across multiple frequencies.
What is a DSL modem?
A modem using telephone lines (ADSL). Download speeds (52 Mbps) are faster than upload speeds (16 Mbps).
What is an ONT?
Optical Network Terminal connects fiber to the premises, marking the point where ISP responsibility ends and the customer’s network begins.
What is a Network Interface Card (NIC)
A fundamental device that connects computers, servers, or devices to networks, specific to types like Ethernet or wireless.
What are routers?
Devices that route traffic between IP subnets and connect various networks like LAN, WAN, and copper/fiber.
What are switches?
Devices that forward traffic using data link addresses (MAC), commonly used in enterprise networks.
What is a patch panel?
A device that organizes network cables using RJ-45 connectors, allowing easy changes in cable connections.
What do firewalls do?
They filter traffic based on port numbers, protect traffic between sites, and provide encryption.
What is Power over Ethernet (PoE)?
A system providing both power and network connectivity over Ethernet cables, useful in difficult-to-power areas.
What is a hub?
A multi-port repeater that sends incoming traffic to all ports but is inefficient due to half-duplex operation.
