Cellular Standards Flashcards
Break down the term “cell phone”
It separates sections of land into “cells” - antenna coverage with certain frequencies
What are the 2 names of the 2g networks
GSM- global system for mobile communications
CDMA- code division multiple access
What is the history of GSM
- 90% of the market used GSM and was originally used in the EU to ensure you had worldwide coverage
- in the US the two providers that used GSM were AT&T and T-mobile
- GSM allowed you to be able to have everything stored on your SIM card (subscriber identity module)
-allowed multiple people to use data at the same time over the same frequencies
What is the history of CDMA
- everyone could communicate at the same time but you also had to send a code when using
-handsets could filter out codes if it was not relevant to them - in the US Verizon and sprint controlled CDMA and the handsets that come with it but wasn’t popular in other places
When was 3G introduced
1998
Benefits of 3G compared to 2g
-It had improved speed so things were sent faster and in bigger sizes
-several megabits per second were used in any area of connectivity
- this meant we could use things such as GPS, mobile streaming
4G and LTE
Stands for Long Term Evolution
It Joined GSM and CDMA providers together
Based on GSM and EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM evolution)
Increased the download/streaming rates to 150 megabits per second
What rate does LTE Advanced download
Supports download rates of 300 mega bits per second
When was 5G brought out
2020
Benefits of 5G
-Significant performance improvements
- use speeds of 100-900 megabits per second
-eventually will be able to use 10 GB per second
What does PRL stand for
Preferred Roaming List
What does PRL do
Allows you to connect your phone to the right UPDATE tower which can be updated over the air
What is hotspot
Where you can extend the cellular data network to all your devices
There may be charges depending on what provider you are with
