Nervous Tissue systems Flashcards
Central Nervous System consists of
- consists of the brain and spinal cord
Motor neuron function
- motor neuron carries impulses from CNS to muscles and glands
motor - outgoing - efferent - ventral
Sensory neuron function
- sensory receives info from the environment and transmits it to CNS
sensory - incoming - afferent - dorsal
TypesofNeuroglia and function
- provide metabolic support and immune protection
- Astrocyte, Oligodendrocyte, Ependymal, Microglia found in CNS
- Schwann and satellite cells found in PNS
Astrocyte function and location
- found in the brain and spinal cord
- biochemical support of endothelial cells that form the blood-brain barrier
Oligodendrocyte function and location
- found in the CNS
- provides support and insulation to axons
Ependymal cell function and location
- found in CNS
- cerebrospinal fluid secretion
Microglia function and location
- found in CNS
- brain maintenance
Peripheral Nervous System
- somatic and autonomic
- autonomic: sympathetic and parasympathetic
somatic nervous system
- consists of neurons that control voluntary muscle movement such as skeletal muscle
- neurotransmitter is acetylcholine
autonomic nervous system
- consists of neurons that control involuntary actions such as smooth muscle
- 2 parts: sympathetic and parasympathetic
sympathetic nervous system functions
- majority in throacic
- functions: inhibits the secretion of digestive fluids, increases heart rate, dilates pupils, constricts blood vessels, regulates the function of glands, particularly the sweat glands
parasympathetic nervous system functions
- majority in cervical and sacral
- functions: stimulate digestive secretion, slow heart rate, constrict pupils, dilate blood vessels
Schwann cells
wrap around portions of one axon to form the myelin sheath
- gaps within the myelin are known as nodes of Ranvier which is the cite of depolarization
satellite cells
surround neuron cell bodies in ganglia and provides support and nutrients
PNS nerves
31 pairs
- 8 cervical pairs
- 12 thoracic pairs
- 5 lumbar pairs
- 5 sacral pairs
- 1 coccygeal pair
