bone tissue and structure Flashcards
long bone structure
compact bone, spongy bone, articular cartilage, diaphysis, metaphysics, proximal and distal epiphysis, periosteum, medullary cavity, red and yellow bone marrow, endosteum, epiphyseal line
osteoblasts
bone-forming cells that secrete the bone matrix
osteocytes
mature bone cells that occupy Lacunae (space within the bone matrix) of which they monitor and maintain
bone lining cells
flat cells found on the bone surface are thought to help maintain the matrix. bone lining cells on the external surface are called Periosteal Cells and those lining the internal surface are called Endosteal Cells
compact bone construct
circumferential lamellae and Haversian system
periosteum
covers outside surface of bones
endosteum
covers internal surfaces
osteon structures
(Haversian system)
lacunae, canaliculi, lamellae, central canal
4 classes of bone
short, long, irregular, flat
examples of long bones
