Nervous Tissue - E4 Flashcards
Composition of the central nervous system
brain and spinal cord
Composition of the peripheral nervous system
Somatic NS - voluntary
Autonomic NS - involuntary
Enteric NS - involuntary
“Entero”
small intestine
sympathetic
parasympathetic
excite
relax
both motor portion of autonomic NS
Another name for autonomic NS
visceral NS
2 major cell types of the nervous tissue
neurons - conduct action potentials
neuroglia - support/aid neurons
what is an action potential?
movement/gradient of chemicals
properties of neurons
- excitability - respond to stimuli
- conductivity - create electrical signals
- secretion - release chemical messengers
Chromatophilic substance
also called Nissl bodies
dense networks of rough ER in the soma of neurons
Dendrites vs Axons
dendrites receive the signals, highly branches
axons send the signals, long w/few branches
axoplasm
axolemma
cytoplasm of axon
plasma membrane of axon
Terminal arborization
synapses w/another neuron, muscle, gland, or cell
contain terminal boutons that contain the chemical messengers
Structural classification of neurons
- multipolar - many dendrites, 1 axon
- bipolar - 1 dendrite, 1 axon
- unipolar - 1 process which branches
Functional classification of neurons
based on direction the impulse travels
- sensory (afferent) - receptor to CNS
- motor (efferent) - CNS to effector
- association (interneurons) - connect sensory and motor
SAME
Neuroglia in general
supportive cells
cover non-synaptic parts of neurons
can divide and multiply
outnumber neurons
