Q

Chronic Conditions that Atherosclerosis in the Cartoid & Cerebral Arteris can cause:

A

Atherosclerosis -> decreased blood flow of brain -> increase age related atrophy. a trophy of brain predisposes to vascular dementia & more prone to subdural hematomas as brain can shift more in skull. Also swelling & bleeding within the plaque can cause transient occulusion of the vessel predisposing to ischaemia this can cause ‘mini-strokes’ or TIAs predisposing to strphy & dementia

Q

Acute Conditions that atherosclerosis of the cartoid & cerebral arteries can cause:

A

Atherosclerosis increases risk of thrombus forming due to tubulent blood flow & localised hypercoagubility. large thrombus may -> ischemia stroke or piece of thrombus may break off becoming embolus which in cartoid & cerebral -> ischeamic stroke which causes oedema & increases cranial pressure but is les dangerous than haemorrhgic stroke.

Atherosclerosis also weakens vessel wall -> aneurysm which is an SOL. SOL causes atrophy but if aneurysm bursts -> rapidly accumulating hematoma -> haemorrhagic stroke which is more likely to kill us due to increase cranial pressure
