nervous system and hormones Flashcards
is the nervous system fast or slow and how does it work
fast / electrical impulses
is the hormonal system fast or slow and how does it work
slow / hormones in the blood
what is the central nervous system
the brain and the spinal cord
whats the nervous systems job
its job is to co-ordinate the bodies responses
how does the nervous system work
a receptor (skin) detects a stimulus (eg hot object)
it sends a message to the CNS along a neurone (nerve cell)
it sends a message back to a effector (muscle or gland)
the body responds accordingly
what are voluntary actions
are contolled by the brain and require thinking time
what are reflex actions
are controlled by the spinal cord and are much faster meaning less damage to the body
what does homeostasis mean
maintaining a constant environment in the body
what are the examples of homeostasis
controlling blood glucose level
controlling water balance (osmoregulation)
what is a hormone
these are chemical messagers produced by the glands aiming to target a organ
whats osmoregulation
control of water balance in the body
how do we gain water
drinking
eating
water made by respiration
how do we lose water
production of urine
urine
breathing
whats the job of the kidney
to control the water balance of the body
how does the kidney work to maintain the correct water balance if we are exercising
if we are exercising and we lose a lot of water in sweat them the kidneys will re-absorb more water back into the blood so that less is lost the urine will become more concentrated (yellow)
how does the kidney work to maintain the correct water balance if we drink alot
the kidneys will re-absorb less water back into the blood and more will be losted in the urine
the urine will les less concentrated (clear)
