eutrophication Flashcards
what is eutrophication
its a process that occurs in rivers and lakes if fertilisers leak into them
what do the fertilisers contain
minerals (nitrates)
what happens after the fertilisers leak into the river
algae starts to grow very fast (algal bloom)
what does the algae cover
the surface of the river and block out the light
when the light gets blocked out what happens
the plants and algae start to die
what uses up the oxygen and what dies
the decomposers (aerobic bacteria) use up the oxygen. the fiish and other animals die
what causes the eutrophication
fertilisers, sewage
what type of chemical is insulin
hormone
describe the process of eutrophication
nitrates cause algal bloom and plant growth
nitrates and plants die because no nitrates
aerobic microorganisms decompose plants and algae
run out of o
plants die
