active uptake Flashcards
how are root hair cells adapted
long hairs to absorb minerals
finger like extension for absorbing minerals
many mitochoria
why do cells have to use active transport
because it needs energy to power it
whats the problem with the minerals in the root hair cells
the concentration of minerals is to high so the minerals cant move from diffusion
how do the cells need to do to take in nitrates
they have to take it against the concentration gradient low to high
if the soil has plenty of oxygen what happens
the root hairs can carry out aerobic respiration and make plently of energy
they can carry out active uptake and move the minerals into the cells against the concentration gradient
if the soil is flooded what happens
the airspaces in the soil are filled with water
therefore there no oxygen in the soil
the root hair cells cant carry out aerobic respiration
they cant make much energy or carry out active uptake
they dont make minerals
cant make protein for growth
they die or grow poorly
why do plants need active transport
the concentration of minerals inside the cell is higher than outside the cells so the minerals cant move by diffusion
