Nervous System Flashcards
The two major regions of the nervous system:
central and peripheral
what does the central nervous system consist of?
Spinal cord, brain
4 types of glial cells:
astrocytes
oligodendrocytes
microglia
ependymal cells
Difference between grey matter and white matter:
grey: regions with many cell bodies and dendrites
white: regions with many axons
What is the somatic nervous system?
responsible for conscious perception and voluntary motor responses, some of which are reflexes
What is the autonomic nervous system?
-responsible for involuntary control of the body -homeostasis (regulating organ systems)
-controls smooth muscle and glandular tissue
What is a neuron?
-basis of nervous tissue
-responsible for electrical signals that communicate sensory information
-responsible for reactions to sensory information
The axon:
propagates the nerve impulse
the dendrite:
receives the nerve impulse at the synapses
What are axons wrapped in?
insulating lipid substance called myelin
nodes of Ranvier:
are the gaps in the myelin sheath
