Nerves & Nervous System, Artery/Veins Structures Week 1 Flashcards
Spinal Accessory Nerve (CN X1) Source:
Superior Spinal Cord
Spinal Accessory Nerve Destination:
Travels through foramen magnum, goes out via jugular foramen into neck
Spinal Accessory Nerve Innervation:
Trapezius, Sternocleidomastoid
Is the Spinal Accessory Nerve motor or sensory
Motor Only
What is the source of the spinal cord
Medulla of brain
What is the destination of the spinal cord
Travels through the vertebral foramena, branches into dorsal and ventral nerve roots, caudal equina
What is the name of the end of the spinal cord?
Conus Medullaris
Cauda Equina source
Conus Medullaris
Cauda Equina destination
forms spinal nerves below L2
What does Cauda Equina innervate?
Muscles below the waist, sympathetic and parasympathetic to the pelvic viscera, skin and glands below groin
Dorsal Root source:
Spinal nerve
Dorsal Root Destination:
Posterior horn of the grey matter of the spinal cord
What does the dorsal root ganglia contain?
contains cell bodies of sensory neurons for body below head (somatic & visceral)
Dorsal Root innervates:
sensory (afferent neurons) below the head
Ventral root source:
Anterior horn of grey matter of the spinal cord
Ventral root destination:
Spinal nerve
Ventral root innervation:
structures with motor innervations (afferent) below head
Where are intervertebral disks?
Between bodies of adjacent vertebrae
What are intervertebral disks made of?
Made of 2 parts: tough anulus fibrosus & softer nucleus pulposu
Function of Intervertebral disks?
Cushions vertebral column
Where do the vertebral arteries arise/drain from?
Subclavian Arteries
Where do the vertebral arteries enter/drain into?
Basilar artery of brain
What structures/areas do the vertebral arteries perfuse?
A major blood vessel of neck, cervical spinal cord, and brain
Where do the “internal vertebral venous plexus” arise from/drain from?
Spinal cord, epidural space, vertebrae
Where does the “internal vertebral venous plexus” enter/drain into?
Vertebral veins, segmental veins of trunk
What is the significance of the internal vertebral plexus regarding pathology?
Route of cancer infection due lack of valves, drainage & associated lymphatics can propagate cancer metastasis
Spinal Nerve Source:
Merging of dorsal and ventral roots
Spinal Nerve Destination:
Branches into dorsal and ventral rami
Spinal Nerve branches into:
Branches into dorsal and ventral rami
Function of Denticulate ligament
Support spinal cord from dura/arachnoid. Holds dura and arachnoid together.
Spinal nerve innervates:
Peripheral body behind and below the face (sensory and motor)
Function of Filum terminale
Anchors spinal cord to coccyx
Where is the Pia Mater?
Deepest very thin layer of connective tissue covering CNS (Brain and Spinal Cord)
Dorsal Ramus source:
Spinal nerve
Dorsal Ramus destination:
Nerves of posterior back
Where is the Subarachnoid space and what does it contain
Space between arachnoid and pia containing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Dorsal ramus innervates:
Skin and deep muscles of the back
Ventral ramus Source:
Spinal nerve
Ventral ramus destination:
Nerves of body wall, limbs, organs
Ventral ramus innervates:
Everything in the body below head except skin/deep muscles of back
