Special sensory innervation to semicircular canals (balance), and cochlea (hearing).

Divides in temporal bone into two divisions, vestibular to semicircular canals and cochlear to cochlea.

A

Taste and general sensation to posterior 1/3 of tongue, soft palate, and pharynx near tongue, general sensation of tympanic cavity, tympanic membrane, auditory tube.

Somatic motor innervation to stylopharyngeus muscle, parasympathetic innervation to parotid gland, visceral sensory innervation to carotid bifurcation for blood pressure control
