NEP Flashcards
what happened to grain requisitioning?
was ended & replaced by a taxation system which allowed peasants to sell surplus grain for profit
what happened to industry?
small scale industry was returned to private hands but heavy industry stayed in state control, as well as transport & banks - this allowed lenin to claim the bolsheviks still had the ‘commanding heights of the economy’
what did they do to try & raise production in factories?
piecework & bonuses
when was currency introduced to pay wages?
1921
what did the government do to try & stop the growing black market
legislation of private trading
what were nepmen?
private businessmen & traders who benefitted from the NEP
what was the scissors crisis?
agricultural tools became in high demand causing the price to go up & because lots of food began to be produced, food got cheaper - meaning farmers couldn’t afford to buy the tools
did the nep increase gdp, industrial & agricultural output?
yes, especially in the first 3 years due to repairing roads & bridges damaged in the war & putting factories back into production - also had better harvests in 1922 & 3 HOWEVER at the peak of the NEP grain production was still at 1/4 of the 1913 level
how was standard of living affected?
most peoples’ increased, restaurants etc brought life back to the cities but peasant farmers had a difficult time (scissors crisis)
did the NEP meet the needs of the state/people?
yes but not all equally = people were happier & had more drive to work, recovering the economy BUT the party wanted to get to a state of large scale industrialisation so they’d be protected in future wars, left wing members also saw it as a step back into more capitalist reforms
