january 1933 to december 1937
what were the aims?
- heavy industry = consolidating gains rather than continuing the pace
- communications & transport
- new industries eg chemical processing
- consumer goods
- promise to improve living standards
- improve labour productivity with incentives & a new code of practice
what was the stakhanovite movement?
alexei stakhanovite mined 102 tonnes of coal in 6 hours in august 1935 (supposedly) & was used as propaganda to appeal to the heroic instincts of soviet workers - alexei was rewarded greatly, setting an example
effects of alexei stakhanovite
inspired workers throughout the ussr & increased production rates
moscow metro & moscow-volga canal
first lines opened in 1935 & canal completed in 1937 which allowed large amounts of materials to be transported across the country
when did certain rationing ended?
in 1934, bread ended, followed by meat & butter etc
industrial workers wages…
increased!!!! yippeee!!!!
why did rationing continue until 1934?
famine in the countryside
what was wrong with the ‘planned’ economy?
rubbish coordination between the different industry branches - factory managers hoarded resources in short supply to meet targets, causing even more scarcity of goods
issue with spare parts
lack of them meant broken machinery was left idle - unproductive!!!!
why did no one criticise this god awful plan??!!!
no one wanted to get murdered of course
