begins end of 3rd week
heart starts to beat at start of 4th week
critical period is 20-50 days after fertilisation
what is the O2 saturation of the foetal body ?
60-70%
what is the function of the ductus arteriosus ?
protects lungs from circulatory overload
allows RV to strengthen
what is the function of the ductus venosus ?
vessel connecting the umbilical vein to the IVC
what are the normal vital signs of a full term newborn ?
HR 120-160 bpm
RR 30-60 min, periodical breathing
BP 70/44
what is physiological jaundice ?
appears after 2-3 days
lasts until 7-10 days
60% of terms, 80% preterms
at high concentrations bilirubin can cause kernicterus (brain change)
how do you treat physiological jaundice ?
blue light phototherapy converts bilirubin to water-soluble form
what is normal fluid balance for newborns ?
weight loss of up to 10% is normal
fluid shifts intravascularly
normal not to pass urine for first 24 hrs
