what are physiological causes for small for dates ?
maternal - smoking alcohol, PET
foetal - Edwards syndrome, infection CMV
placental - placental abruption
twin pregnancy
what are common problems when small for date ?
perinatal hypoxia hypoglycaemia hypothermia polycythaemia thrombocytopenia GI problems
what are long term problems for being small for date ?
hypertension
reduced growth
obesity
IHD
how do you treat respiratory distress syndrome ?
prevention - antenatal steroids
early surfactant treatment
N-CPAP
what are consequences of patent ductus arteriosus ?
over-perfused lungs
lung oedema
systemic ischaemia
can result on low renal perfusion and GI problems
what is necrotising enter-colitis ?
ischaemic and inflammatory changes
necrosis of bowel
surgical intervention often required
conservative management and Abx + parenteral nutrition
what are the classes of preterm babies ?
preterm <37 weeks
extremely preterm <28 weeks
what are the classes of low birth weights ?
low - <2500g
very low - <1500g
extremely low - <1000g
